In Part I, 1962-1969, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss form a partnership in 1962 to produce and distribute their own recordings; they establish their music publishing houses and their first international record distribution agreements. The Tijuana Brass develops from a regional to a to a national then international act. The success of the TJB lets Alpert and Moss buy the former Charlie Chaplin Studios where A&M Records will be headquartered until 1999. Sixteen out of the first 25 albums released would be certified gold, and many platinum, in the United States. Almo International and Omen Records are started as divisions of A&M. Creed Taylor signs a manufacturing and distribution agreement for CTI Records with A&M bringing a new jazz presence to the label.

In Part II, the 1970s, A&M Records of Canada and Aamp;M Records Ltd. of Great Britain are established not only to distribute American product but to also sign and develop Canadian and British artists. Alpert and Moss start Horizon Records as their in-house jazz label. Lou Adler brings his Ode Records and George Harrison brings his Dark Horse Records into manufacturing and distribution agreements with A&M. While the label had outstanding years with many of its artists, the music industry also experiences a major slump that causes Alpert and Moss to enter a distribution agreement with RCA marking the end of A&M as an independent label.

As the record industry slump continued in the 1980s A&M cuts its artist roster in half; it has its best year at the Grammys; establishes A&M Films, and enters distribution agreements with Windham Hill Records, Word Records, Shoreline Records and Nimbus Records plus a licensing agreement with Twin/Tone Records. A&M celebrated its 25th anniversary and opened its Latin Division AyM Discos and its dance division Vendetta Records. The 1980s were one of A&M's most creative with the introduction of laser-etched vinyl, 3" CDs and the first promotional CD in the industry. while A&M Films began releasing major motion pictures. By the end of 1989, Alpert and Moss sold their record company to PolyGram NV.

The 1990s are covered in Part IV. Alpert and Moss continue to run A&M Records under PolyGram until mid-1993. During the 1990s, A&M would create distribution arrangements with Perspective Records; Ric Wake's DV8 Records, Flip Records, Shaquille O'Neal's T.W.Is.M. Records and PolyGram imprints that were known as A&M Associated Labels. The 1990s were a difficult decade for A&M--it lost major artist Janet Jackson; it reorganized its sales staff and its black music division, closed A&M Nashville, and finally was forced to fire most of its employees in January 1999 when the merger of PolyGram and Universal Music Group became effective. Universal also closed the legendary A&M Studios and sold the A&M Records headquarters, the Charlie Chaplin Studios, to The Henson Company.

In the final part,The music industry continued to consolidate and it had experienced dramatic shifts in promoting artists due to the rise of music videos and the internet's ability to deliver more flexible ways to distribute music. Digital file sharing and sampling brought new questions about copyrights and intellectual property while people found that everyone could promote music they like. A&M was the lead plaintiff against Napster in that resulted in court decisions on what was and was not appropriate copying, downloading, uploading, transmission and distibution of music.

After firing A&M's last president two years earlier, Universal named a new president to the label. Universal also settled the law suits brought by Alpert and Moss because both PolyGram and Universal had violated the integrity clasue that preserved A&M's corporate culture for ten years after the sale. In the settlement, Universal bought Rondor Music Group and ALMO Sounds record label. In 2007, Universal merged A&M with Octone Records and placed it under Octone's management team.
