George Johnson (Brothers Johnson) urged John McClain, vice president a&r, to sign Sly Stone to A&M Records. With support from Herb Alpert, Sly was signed to an album deal. The label took the deal one step at a time and released "Eek-Ah-Bo-Static Automatic" and teamed Sly with Jesse Johnson.

Sly Stone was voted 78 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
