Charlie Smalls signed with A&M Records as an artist and with Almo/Irving as a songwriter in 1968. His song "The Buzzard" was a track included in the Broadway play "The Boys In the Band." The original cast album was on A&M Records.
Smalls went on to compose the music and write the lyrics for the Broadway production of "The Wiz." There were songs in the score. He won the Tony Award for Best Score and the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. For the motion picture, he expanded the score to 26 tracks. The song "Ease On Down the Road" was released as a single and certified gold.
