Billy Eckstine
[I was about 14 or 15 years old, and Bobby Tucker came in with Billy Eckstine, so we played together—and all of my life, right up to now, Billy Eckstine has been a guideline and a friend to me. He’s taught me as a friend, as a musician, and as a businessman. He led the way.”
—Quincy Jones, Down Beat, October 23, 1975.
In August 1976, A&M Records announced it signed Billy Eckstine and that Herb Alpert and Quincy Jones would be his producers.
Eckstine's first A&M single "The Best Thing" entered Billboard's Hot Soul Singles Chart at #89 on October 16, 1976. The single only charted for one week. At the same time the single garnered local radio attention in Dallas, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Spartanburg and Cincinnati.
