Melvin Van Peebles
Signed with A&M Records in 1968 as an artist, writer and producer.
About his album Brer Soul, Van Peebles told Billboard, "It seemed to me that we had been hyped into doing imitations of imitations, or parodies of ourself, or at the very best diluted and sterilized versions of black life. I was listening to some black soul music, and I couldn't hear anything I could relate to as far as a meaningful lyric was concerned. [Brer Soul is] a record for everybody to dig. It's an album that black people can understand, but if white people take the time to learn the niceties of black culture, they will be able to appreciate the album as well as anything else." Billboard reported the album was "mini-dramas of urban ghetto life, created from [Van Peebles'] flashbacks as a kid on Chicago's South Side. Idiomatic language set to hot jazz should make this LP a milestone."
In 1971, A&M Records released its first box set. It contained two of Melvin Van Peebles albums, a biography and publicity photo.
