Robyn Hitchcock

Signed with A&M Records in 1987.

"'Balloon Man' I wrote for The Bangles, if you remember them. I was in touch with a couple of them, and I sent them a quarter-inch, 7.5 IPS reel. I don’t know if they did anything with it. Probably not, I guess. And I recorded what I thought was a demo of it for the first A&M record. By this time, I’d been signed by A&M Records, as we were very popular in the alternative college charts, so I recorded that with Morris and Andy as a demo, and one of the A&M people heard it and said, 'Oh, no, you’ve got to put this one on the record! It’s great!' So I said, 'Okay.' It’s just a New York story, you know?"
