Signed as an A&M Records artist in August 1968. He was already a staff producer for the label working with Liza Minnelli, Dillard and Clark, Phil Ochs, and the Merry-Go-Round.

Marks' single "L.A. Breakdown", released in mid-August 1968, was a breakout single in Los Angeles in August 1968.
