Matthew Sweet

Sweet's album Girlfriend was recorded while he was under contract to A&M Records in 1990. A&M was in its first year as a PolyGram subsidiary label. Reacting to that situation, Sweet asked to offer the album to the highest bidder. A&M canceled his contract. The album went on to sell more than 250,000 copies over the next year.
