Sister Janet Mead
Sister Janet Mead began by bringing rock music into her church's Mass. She was a conservatory trained pianist before becoming a nun and teaching music in Catholic schools. Her idea was that a Mass with rock music would make the service more inviting to younger parishoners.
In Australia, "The Lord's Prayer" peaked at #3 during 1974. "The greatest traditional lyrics ever written," Mead said of the song. A&M Records had the worldwide rights outside Australia. In the U.S., the song broke in Los Angeles.
Sister Janet Mead was the first Australian artist to sell over one million copies of an Australian-produced record in the U.S. with her hit single "The Lord's Prayer."
In Canada "The Lord's Prayer" single was rush released several days after the U.S. released it and launched a promotional campaign.
Sister Janet Mead's single "The Lord's Prayer" sold three million copies worldwide, with 1.5 million in the U.S. where it was certified as a gold single, and was distributed by A&M in 31 countries."
After the album of the same name, and the immense success of the single, Mead elected to end her recording career. She continued to pursue her love of music within the Catholic church.
