Guido Sarducci

Father Guido Sarducci is a fictional character. Actor Don Novello created him in the early 1970s. The character came to popularity on Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s, several years after his one-off recording for A&M Records.

On his A&M Records single "A European (Speaks Up For the U.S.)" the credit is given as Guido Sarducci. The label did not want to give the impression that the comedian was a priest. The track gained traction and two days after its release entered the Billboard chart at #69. On the third day the American Italian Anti Defamation League contacted radio stations saying the record was offensive and asking the radio stations to stop playing it and return copies of it to A&M.

At the same time A&M released Sister Janet Mead's "The Lord's Prayer." Mead was an Australian nun. Her version of "The Lord's Prayer" was done in a rock style. It peaked at #4 in the U.S.
