Founded by Louis (Chip) and Carol Davis, Jr. in 1974 as a label for his band Mannheim Steamroller.

In November 1985, A&M Records Canada announced it would distribute American Gramaphone. The arrangement ran from 1985-1987. At the time, the catalog was 14 albums.  Fresh Aire catalog was acquired in 1985.

By the end of the distribution agreement American Gramaphone released 23 albums. The vinyl albums used a heavier 120 gram weight pure virgin vinyl, rice paper inner sleeve, original cover art and 100-gauge loose plastic outer wrap. The retail price in Canadian dollars in 1985 was $18.98 for albums and $13.98 for cassettes.
