Founded by Louis (Chip) and Carol Davis, Jr. in 1974 as a label for his band Mannheim Steamroller.

Distributed by A&M Records of Canada 1980-1987. During that time American Gramophone released 23 albums. The vinyl albums used a heavier vinyl, rice paper inner sleeve, original cover art and loose plastic outer wrap.
